Today I was having problems with the rover getting a rtk. After some trouble shooting I found that the antenna was full of water. Are these antennas water proof and suited for being out all year? Or is this just a bad unit? I have 2 more that I was able to swap out and the unit is working now.
I tried to google this issue. Could not find any single content on what to do if water gets into the RTK antenna. I hope Sparkfun will give a solution. Because this is very common in the Rainy season.
We have heard from another user with a similar issue. The sealant around the antenna was at fault. We’ve brought this up with TopGNSS (the mfg) as well. They are currently doing testing on their units.
Couple pictures of the water damage. Haven’t heard from support yet and need the base station running so thought I’d try opening and draining to see if it would work. Pried the top off and drained the water, some rust visible from I think the shield can. Rinsed with isopropyl alcohol and re-mounted outside and seems to be working! I’ll cover this with a bag when not using it until I get a replacement to try and keep the rain out.
I did manage to get some drops of water to come out along the seal between the top and bottom before opening it.
Yes, with a lot of force. You have to break through the sealant that should surround the entire lip between the two halves. I used a flat head screw driver inserted then twist to pry the halves apart.
