Tutorial shifter board question.

Hello,

I recently built one of your shifter boards and realized that the device I want to talk to supplies 12v vcc to the board but is still looking for 5v tx/rx. Will the board knock down the voltage to 5v or do I have to make a 5v power supply? Since I am so new to electronics I can’t figure out the answer, thanks.

You didn’t mention which shifter board, but most take VCC from the processor card. That would rule out directly connecting 12v to a circuit requiring 5v. If you post more specific information (a schematic, for example), we can provide a better answer.

It’s the exact same shifter board that is made in “Lecture 6 - Soldering Basics” in the sparkfun tutorials (here is a link, schematic is there http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/tutori … als_id=106). I am supplying 12v to Vcc (in a car), but I realized it is looking for 5v.
