VL53L1X gives constant measurements when pointed into 'open air'

I must be missing something. I want to detect a car pulling into my driveway but when I direct the sensor and the example Arduino app across the EMPTY driveway I get constant measurements even though there is nothing there.

I did try and add in the interrupt option but no difference was noted.

What am I missing?
