Which GPS module/device should I purchase?

Hello everyone. First let me say that I’m excited about all of the great devices offered by Sparkfun. I just want to buy everything and start building stuff!

However, I do have a need for a GPS tracking device and I don’t have the skills or time to build my own. I’m currently working on getting my private pilots license and I would like to track each of my flights. The goal is to bring this device with me in each flight and then pull all the flight data off it when I get home. Once I have the flight data I’ll be able to few my entire flight on Google Maps or something similar.

Now I’ve looked at a few ‘tracking’ products at Sparkfun. The two that caught my eye are KinetaMap and Package Tracker. I’m not sure which device is best for the job. Here’s a list of data that I would like collected.

Required Data

  • Latitude

    Longitude

    Altitude

    Time of Day

  • Data that would be great, but not necessary

  • Acceleration

    Temperature

    Humidity

  • Any suggestions on the best device for my needs? It looks like the Package Tracker provides all of the extra data but I would still need to buy the GPS Module, SD card, and battery. So maybe the KinetaMap is the best device for now.

    Thanks for any ideas!

I just noticed the GeoChron. That looks promising. I notice that people were able to create KMZ files for Google Earth. That would be great!

If you use the CEL-00280 GM862 and load one of the Python scripts folks have created [and sell] - I use the one offered by TrackBox, about 50$ as I recall - you can send the trip to one of the on-line tracking services. I use Franson GPSgate for this, about 99$ a year.

This way your possie can track your flight in realtime.

Check out TrackBox and Franson GPSgate to see if this would be of any interest to you.

    Thanks
