12v vacuum and arduino

Hi I purchased this Vacuum: https://www.sparkfun.com/products/10398

I also picked up this mosfet: https://www.sparkfun.com/products/12959

I have an Arduino MEGA and I was wondering if I could power this vacuum using a 12v 4.5Ah battery.

Also if I were to be able to use this battery with the Mosfet to power the vacuum on and off how would I wire it. Thanks.

Thanks for your post.

Wiring would look something like the drawing below.

It’s not shown in the drawing but since a motor is an inductive load, it would be a good idea to place a diode across the motor leads wired so that the cathode of the diode connects to the positive wire (orange) and the anode connects to the negative wire. (black)

A digital high on the yellow wire turns the motor on and a digital low turns it off.

sorry to ask but what type of diode would I need. Also is a 12v 4.5AH power supply ok for the mosfet

Any diode would probably work, but a diode like [COM-14844 is what I’d use. The MOSFET doesn’t really care what kind of battery you’re using and a 12v 4.5AH will be fine for the vacuum pump.](Diode Rectifier - 1A, 400V (1N4004) - COM-14884 - SparkFun Electronics)

Hi I followed the schematic you gave. There is no power coming out of the mosfet. What could be wrong?

Please send clear photos of your setup and I will take a look.

Looks like a great choice. Carry on!

I wonder will it work with such a model of vacuum? If I want to modify it.

I’ve purchased WELIKERA Dust Buster Cordless Handheld Vacuum and I decided it’ll be my first project to modify myself. What do you think guys?
