3 Watt LED Mounting?

Hi All,

I recently bought these LEDs.

I was wondering if anyone has any recommended mounting methods. Is everyone just tapping holes into a heatsink or aluminum plate and screwing the LED down with some thermal paste? The board seems hard to locate a screw head without shorting something out.

With this style LED, I usually drill and tap a heat sink and use plastic washers to isolate the screws from the pads just in case.

One of the SparkFun videos in the product page mentioned using thermal heat tape to attach them to a piece of aluminum

Thanks! I was afraid of using the plastic washers to prevent melting but I guess if the heatsink isn’t doing its job maybe you have bigger problems. I’ll check out the heat tape

Even using cheap plastic washers, I’ve never had an issue with heat. That said, there are lots of options in the plastic realm and many non-plastic options too. McMaster is a good place to go to see what’s available in the market.
