Better Managed "Order Status" update?

Is there a way to have a more itemized detail of what is going on with the process of boards?

When I look at one of my orders (#2838), the last Order Status shows “01/09/2007 Waiting Panelization”, and the Order Status says “Panelized”…

This doesn’t tell me much, and since the order was placed on the 8th, I am getting concerned. Has it gone to China? Has it arrived back? were there issues with it?

Is there a way to have a more itemized detail of the Order status, such as “Panelized”, “Panel sent to Manufacturing”, “Manufacturing complete”, “Order delivered to BatchPCB”, “Order shipped to customer”…or is this just a problem with my order?

thanks. This will help a lot more with coordinating a schedule for parts placement and ordering.

Shaun

I think it would take a large amount of man hours to do the suggested method.

Batch PCB really (as I understand it) has no way of knowing what step the process is at after they panelized the Gerber files and send them.

They know when they receive the shipment, if there are any rework parts, and what has been shipped (because they shipped them).

But this is only my take on the situation,

It’s unlikely that you will see a more detailed order status in the future. This is one of the issues you have to put up with in order to get the cheapest one-off board pricing around.

Just so you know, "“Order delivered to BatchPCB”, “Order shipped to customer” are the same step - we ship out batchpcb stuff usually the same day we recieve it.

I was wondering the same thing. I placed an order right around the same time as Steel and still have not recieved it. From the BatchPCB FAQ -

How long does it take to get my order?

Cheap and fast don’t play well together. If you need your design fabbed in 24 hours - use another board house. We like Advanced Circuits for great quality boards in 1-5 days.
Time line example for BatchPCB:
You submit your order, successfully pass the DRC, and pay on Tuesday the 4th (day 0)
The week’s batch of orders leaves on the 10th (6 days so far)
The panel of orders is fabricated in 7 days (13 days so far)
The individual PCBs are shipped to BatchPCB in Colorado via DHL 3-day (16 days so far)
We then ship your order out same day via USPS Priority Mail 3-days (19 days so far)
So you see - worst case is about 19 days, best case is about 10 days. It all depends on when you order and when the batch gets sent off.
If there is a holiday in China - expect delays. Expect delays around Christmas, New Years, and Lunar New Year.
If Homeland Security decides the “heavy brick” PCB package needs inspection, expect a 1 day delay.
If you order first class mail, shipping may take an extra 10 days. We recommend USPS Priority Mail for all PCB shipments. It’s cheap and fast.
This all sounds worse than it really is! As we develop projects, we always get at least one PCB design onto the week’s batch panel. While one design is being fabbed, we have new PCBs for another design already arriving from a previous batch - we always have new PCBs to play with!

Hi, our fab in china is taking much longer than usual regarding these panels. We’re expecting them any day now. A bunch of our own inhouse designs are on those panels, so we’re in the same boat as you guys

Thanks David, good to know.

Ah, ok, I feel much better now. I was wondering what was going on. I am used to waiting for my boards, but it has been a LONG time this go around. I’ll just wait along with the rest of youins

Another update for you all. Specifically, there are two panels we are waiting for, which are quite overdue now. We’re expecting them friday at the latest.

My designs are on there as well, so I suffer with you ;).

Does this mean that orders placed in February will be backed up as well? I placed my order February 27th and was hoping to get the boards by the 20th of March. Do you think this is going to happen?

All the other panels seem to be on time at the moment, just those two that were really backed up.

What is the proper list of stages for an order?

Okay, here’s what I think.

I understand that you guys have little or no control over what happens in a chinese fab house. I understand that it’s impractical to even know what’s going on at said fab house. However, you give in your FAQ a set of seemingly solid guidelines for how long the process should take. If what is written in that FAQ does not reflect reality (and it doesn’t, unless you’re ready to claim that one holiday is responsible for weeks of delay), it needs to be changed.

Hi,

The vast majority of our panels follow that timeline, and we generally haven’t had this kind of issue before.

There were two panels that completely went off the rails. Those panels came in late last week and were shipped out from us immediately.

–David Carne

Then by all means, put that in the FAQ. Just don’t omit that these things happen completely.

My status now says “Label Printed.” Does this refer to the silkscreen layer, or some part of the shipping process?

We’ve never seen this large of a delay before. We’ll consider adding a note to the faq.

Label printed means we’ve printed the shipping label and its either sitting in the box waiting for USPS pickup, or its already shipped out.

I just looked up your order in our order database, and it appears we’re exactly on time with your order regarding the timeline specified in our FAQ.

Thanks for the update. I was referring to other people who seem to be having more trouble than I am.

Mike,

I think that is very funny…you are speaking for people who already have spoken. They asked…got an answer…and moved on.

You must get hung up on things.

If you are not having a problem…then why are you pursuing this?

All companies have delays of some kind …it may not happen often…but it happens.

If you don’t like the service…don’t use it.

It is a fact of life…shit happens…I don’t think that should be noted in the FAQ…

Ok…my rant is over.
