Costume Project Suggestions

Hi, I’m trying to help my daughter with a Cosplay costume and stumped for a solution for something she wants.

She has a mask (just a basic mask that just goes around the eyes). She wants to have red leds on the sides of the eye openings (everything will be covered with a cloth to conceal the leds itself but allow the glow of the light to show through). She is wanting the lights to be on with an occasional off so they will look like they blink occasionally.

The problem is that just being on a mask like this, there isn’t any big area to hide a battery pack, so need to keep the battery size as small as possible (preferably be able to be contained within the mask).

We have tried to use the Lilypad as the controller to blink the eyes, but any small enough battery of the correct voltage that we could find didn’t carry enough power to power the Lilypad.

Her costume doesn’t really give any way to hide any wires going to a power pack on her body anywhere.

So wondering if anyone out there might have a better solution for this that might work for us. The longer run time the better, but if all she can get is maybe an hour or so, she would be happy with that, if she can replace the battery easily.

Thank you,

Mike

Hi Mike,

Have you taken a look at the [LilyTwinkle for this project? That board will run just fine on either a single-cell LiPo battery or a coin cell. It comes pre-programmed to fade each output on and off. The [Quickstart Guide will go over this board and some example circuits as well if you need help setting it up.

You might be able to fit the [LilyPad Coin Cell Battery Holder somewhere on the mask for the power source. [This tutorial for powering LilyPad LED projects gives some good tips and information for how long various LilyPad LED projects will last on different batteries so you can figure out what type of battery (or batteries) you would need to use to have the costume run for however long your daughter needs it to.

We may have some other options I am forgetting now so if you have already ruled these products out, let me know and I can see what else we have that could work here.](https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/powering-lilypad-led-projects)](LilyPad Coin Cell Battery Holder - Switched - 20mm - DEV-13883 - SparkFun Electronics)](https://www.sparkfun.com/tutorials/390)](https://www.sparkfun.com/products/11364)

Thank you, that might give us a different option. I’ll pass this on to my daughter.
