I hooked the rpi5 up to the touchscreen and to a keyboard. I connected it to my LAN with a known good cable. I inserted the SD card I bought along with the RPI5. I then applied power from the RPI power supply while holding down the shift key as instructed for net booting. Nothing happens. There is no activity light on the LAN switch for the port the RPI is connected to. At power on the lower LED on the RPI comes on for a long flash, goes out and the upper LED comes on. Disconnecting the display and/or keyboard and/or LAN cable or removing the SD card makes no difference.
What image is flashed on the SD card? Are you using the 27w pi 5 supply?
What image is flashed on the SD card?
None. I was following the instructions given here:
https://www.raspberrypi.com/documentation/computers/getting-started.html#install-over-the-network
Are you using the 27w pi 5 supply?
Yes.
Should the flat cable from the display have a twist in it? The contacts
on the connector on the RPI appear to be on the side toward the ethernet
connector.
Should anything appear on the display when the RPI powers up with no OS
present?
It looks like it should display
, though I doubt it would work without an image present…my guess is it is trying to default outputting video via hdmi…unhook the display for now and test with a standard hdmi display if possible

Not possible. However it boots from an SD card and the display works.
The netboot instructions need to say that it only works with HDMI.
