R-pi 5 blinks green 8x, no display, need RMA?

Sparkfun Order #000030845 R-Pi5. Was in a metal case using official power supply. Unit was working. Now gives eight rapid green blinks, and generates no display. From what I’ve read this unit is dead due to failed SDRAM. If so, please setup an RMA as unit is brand new. If not, how can I revive it? Thank you.

1. Check Power Supply

  • Ensure that you’re using the correct power supply for the Raspberry Pi 5. It requires a stable 5V power source with enough current (at least 3A)…is your power the official pi5 one (27w)?
  • Low power can sometimes lead to strange behavior, including issues with PSRAM

2. Inspect the SD Card and OS

  • A corrupted or improperly written OS image could be the cause. Try the following:
    • Re-flash your SD card with the latest Raspberry Pi OS (Raspberry Pi Imager, balenaEtcher, or SD association formatter are good tools for this).
    • Make sure the SD card is not damaged, and try using a different one if possible.

3. Test with Minimal Setup

  • Disconnect all peripherals (USB devices, HDMI, etc.) and try booting the Raspberry Pi with just the power supply and SD card. This can help eliminate issues caused by other connected devices.

4. Check for Hardware Damage

  • See if there is any physical debris obvious on the chips/pins on the Pi

5. Update Bootloader (Optional/may not be possible)

  • If you’re able to boot the Raspberry Pi without PSRAM, you could try updating the bootloader firmware.
    • Download the latest bootloader recovery image from the Raspberry Pi website and follow the instructions to flash it to an SD card.
    • Insert the SD card into your Raspberry Pi and power it on to update the bootloader.

If none of that helps: Was it purchased from us? If so head over to Returns (contact vendor if purchased elsewhere) and we’ll get ya squared away

I am using the official R-pi power supply, which is plugged directly into the device.

I tried a whole different SD card. Using a Linux machine load the same image that worked before the failure.

Tried with nothing plugged in, and out of the metal case I had it in. No matter what I do I get the 8 green blinks. https://forums.raspberrypi.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=58151 says that means your SDRAM is dead.

If there is another image you’d like me to try please provide a link. I can verify the card to make sure it got flashed correctly. Otherwise please set up an RMA, this device had only been used for a couple weeks when it failed.

I also tried it with no SD card plugged in. Still get 8 blinks.

Thank you
