RMA Request For Raspberry Pi 5 Board

Hi Sparkfun Team,

I have recently ordered the Raspberry Pi 5 Basic Kit - 8GB (SKU: KIT-23617) for a class project, and I think the board I received has a hardware issue.

I’ve installed a new kernel from my Ubuntu VM onto a SD card, but once I insert the SD card into my Raspberry Pi, the status light on the board stays solid green for around 8 seconds, flickers for around 10 more, then returns to being solid green with the occasional flicker until powered off. This happens only with the power cable and a microHDMI to HDMI cable connected to the board.

If I power on the board without the SD card, it brings me to a log where I am able to see what is happening on the Pi as it boots up. After getting into this screen, when I plug in the SD card, the board runs through a series of files before displaying the last operation “fs_open: ‘armstub-2712.bin’”. After this, the screen turns black and the board returns to the state of having a solid green status light with an occasional flicker. I am using the power supply provided in the kit and I’ve confirmed that I’ve properly formatted my SD card and correctly flashed the kernel to my SD card.

This problem is similar to the one described in this form: https://forums.raspberrypi.com/viewtopic.php?t=363184. Unfortunately, this form does not have a solution posted, and there is a similar post on the Sparkfun forms where there wasn’t a solution apart from filing a RMA (Raspberry Pi stuck on boot). I was also able to check with my instructors for the class, and my SD card was able to boot on a different Raspberry Pi5 board, while a known working SD card was unable to boot on my Raspberry Pi5 board.

This request is a bit time sensitive because I need to meet a deadline next week for an assignment in this class.

Thank you in advance,
Ben Bao
