Distance of RFID antenna?

I’ve got a small project I’m working on and I’d like to keep everything as condensed as possible. I used the ID-3LA RFID receiver.

I’ve built my antenna at about ~145mm diameter and I only get about 50mm range out of it, I’m aiming for about 100mm. I’ve reduced the number of coils until I got a reading, then kept reducing it until I started to get less of a reading. My range peaked at about 50-60mm. My Arduino unit and a couple other small components are fairly close (60-70mm) to the antenna which I’m assuming could be reducing my range.Could this be my reason of such a short range sensing range? I’ve read other people claim to get 150-180mm range easily.

I think its about increasing the broadcast power more so than antenna design. You can use any of the standard antennas as reference for increasing the read distance.

antenna gain is far more important than small changes in transmitter power. Antenna gain brings the same benefits if used at either end of the link.

A good antenna needs to be purchased, not DIY, as a rule.
