Download Linux2.6 to Olimex E9302 board

Hi,

Can anybody give me clues how to download Linux2.6 to the Olime CS-E9302(http://www.olimex.com/dev/index.html)

???

Hi readbenz,

My CS-E9302 came with Linux already installed:

BusyBox v1.1.3 (2006.08.22-13:03+0000) Built-in shell (ash)

Enter ‘help’ for a list of built-in commands.

~ # cat /proc/version

Linux version 2.6.21 (ivan@debian) (gcc version 4.0.1) #17 PREEMPT Wed May 2 10:42:16 EEST 2007

~ #

Pressing Cntrl-C during boot will allow changing of boot image. The documentation to do this was found in the “EP930x quickstart guide.txt”

that came with the CD.

I had to use a Null modem cable with Hyperterminal set to 57600,N,8,1

I hope this helps.

Hi Benf…

Thankx for ur reply…I am glad that i found somene to reply on my thread.

Actually I have read in “EP930x quickstart guide.txt” that is preloaded with Linux2.6 .

BUT I am following, the quick guide instrunction (connect serial port, set hyper terminal then turn on power supply) then it is supposed to start up the redboot. BUT i dont get anything (NO boot, no shell etc…).

Do you have any idea ?

(I am using Windows XP, USB to serial dongle [My Laptop doesn’t have COM port] )

Thanx

Hi raedbenz,

I think you should use a null-modem cable, because te RS232 on the Olimex board has the same connections as any PC.

For concetions see link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Null_modem

Please let me know if this is the solution.

Hi Carlov,

Actually the same USB-RS232 converter i use now for CS-E9302, i was using it with Olimex LPC 2129 board, and it was working fine. so do you think the case is different here with CS-E9302?

Thankx

Hi Raedbenz,

Pin number 2 of the Sub-D-9 connectors on both the CS-E9302 and your PC are the Rx (receive line) en pin number 3 are on both devices the Tx (transmit).

To make the communication work, these lines should be twisted. My advise is to make a null modem cable like the second drawing on the next page (Null modem with loop back handshaking):

http://www.lammertbies.nl/comm/info/RS- … modem.html

(The loop-back is only needed on the PC side, but if you make these on both sides, like in the drawing, you don’t have to remember which cable-side should be connected on which device.)

On the LPC2129 board, the Rx and Tx are twisted, so a 1 on 1 cable should be used (like you do).

Success!

Hi Carlov,

The cable it seems that it worked.

I am getting at the end of booting this screen, I press enter but nothing happens…

plz see the screenshot:

Hi,

Before starting Hyperterminal go to the device management in Windows and force the settings of you COM port to: 57600, 8, None, 1, None.

Hyperterminal receives the data well, so only sending data seem to have a problem. Check in Hyperterminal if the DataTransportControl is also set to None (so not controlled by soft- or hardware). If this is not the solution, measure with help of a multimeter if all wires of the null modem cable are well connected.

Success.

Hii Raedbenz,

One test I use (to see if its the computer or board) is to short pins 2 and 3 together on the PC side. One can soldering the two pins together on an adaptor, or use a needle nose plier or alligator clip or paper clip.

Then, one should see in the terminal program what one is typing. If nothing appears, its a PC issue.

If one see’s the characters, then its a board issue and it should be returned/repaired.

I can not get the ARM-USB-OCD serial to work on my PC at all, But I can get the USB serial adaptor (Sparkfun-SerialUSB-Prolific) to work out the PC’s back USB port (but not the USB on the side of the computer).

Best of luck.

This test resulted in normal operation of PC side. (I wrote all proper characters on screen)

Also for this test , i did all configurations plus the multimeter test and everything was fine.

BUT the problem still exists

Do you think the jumpers need to be configured??

I also noticed when I connect the serial port in Null configuration without handshaking (i.e. only pins 2, 3 and 5 ) it does show strange characters on screen (not proper english), if i connect pin 1 in addition (CD: Carrier Detect), it starts work fine and i reach to the bottom line which says press enter (and as u know NO response for the ENTER)…

help plz…

Hi Raedbenz,

The jumpers should be kept as they were, as shown in the pictures on the website: http://olimex.com/dev/cs-e930x.html

Do you have access to some other PC or laptop/notebook that has a original RS-232 connector? I suggest you try the connection on another computer to see if your cable and your Olimex board function OK.

If you still have the same problems, it’s almost certain that something is wrong with the CS-E9302 board. But at this moment I suspect more your USB to RS-232 converter. Are there also settings on this converter possible?

I hope you can discover the cause of the problem this way…
