EM-406 module. No success in getting a fix

This is my first try at GPS modules. I connected the module through MAX232 to my PC and laptop. Using GPSinfo and sirfdemo utilities the modules starts sending NMEA messages fine. Sirf protocol works fine too. But no luck getting a fix. GPSinfo module lists the satellites it can track but signal strength is not there. I have driven around in the open areas, sat outside with my laptop but no luck getting the fix. I am waiting patiently for the red LED to start blinking as that is signal that the module has gotten a fix but no luck so far.

I am sure I am missing something obvious. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

TIA

Sounds as though the unit is faulty. I don’t know much about the SiRF GPS units (I’m using u-blox) but the LED should start blinking less than a minute or so after power is applied. Looking at the spec. it should work indoors, you shouldn’t need to drive around to test it.

Thanks Leon for a quick reply.

I have opened a support call at the usglobalsat (the manufacturer) too. Let’s see if they are of any help. Anyone knows what is the policy of sparkfun for handling such situations ? I will keep trying for the weekend if it does not help may be Sparkfun can come to my rescue.

Yeah, definitely sounds like there could be a problem with the unit. Mine can get a fix even on the middle floor of my lab.

Thanks NleahciM.

I just sent a mail to the sparkfun folks describing the problem unless they read this forum. May be I need an exchange.
