Hi
I have tried to find a reseller in Europe, but it seems there are export restrictions on the Torch. However, not on something like the SparkFun RTK mosaic-X5.
Can you elaborate on that? Are there somethings in the works solving that or is this restriction final?
The RTK Torch uses the UM980 GNSS receiver from Unicore, a subsidiary of BDStar which was listed by the BIS for export control. We’re still checking to see if we can export to Europe, but generally speaking, it’s severely limited.
Thank for the reply - I hope it gets sorted.
Not to question the logic - but that chip is dead easy to get a hold on. Simple ebay search.
Why no sell a DIY version without the chip.
I’d imagine because that would also be looked on dimly by the authorities… and be a source of a lot of support requests
What about exporting the RTK Torch to Canada?
I am interested in the RTK Torch as it is one of the few devices available that supports Galileo-HAS (E6b), at about 1/4 the price of the competition.
Digikey still has two of the beta RTK Torch (GPS-24672) in stock. Do these not use the same chip, or are they only available because they were exported prior to the restrictions?
We currently do not export the UM980, and I think you are right that Digikey exported some just before the ban took effect…
However, the LG290P receives that frequency, and Quectel has told us that the next firmware release will have the PPP engine required to utilize HAS. We have both the breakout board, AND the RTK Postcard (that runs our full RTK Everywhere firmware) as options
So…it doesn’t have HAS yet, but the chip manufacturer has said that it will within a relatively short time period (my guess is within 3 months)
