I just got my new HAC-UM96 wireless modems and am eager to start using them.
I want to connect one of them to a PC and i’ve already connected one to a Basic Atom Bot Board II.
Before I fry the modem and/or my PC i’d like to verify the connections.
In order to connect the modem to the PC, which connections should i make, and do I need something in between, or just jumper cables from the modem pins to the ones on the RS-232 port on the pc?
Read the manual. There are both TTL level and RS232 level serial connections. You could do damage if you hook it up wrong so make sure you understand what the manual is telling you.
Yeah, I know. I read the manual and it’s quite crappy. I tried reading in the forum for previous posts regarding that modem. some say they hooked it up to a pc but they don’t mention how. I know which pins on the modem are for RS232 connection but I am not sure if they are capable of recieving the high voltages from the PC or if i should use a MAX232 circuit (or anything else) in between.
The PDF I found sucked as well. Looking at it, it looks like COM2 will work with standard computer RS-232 voltages. Do you have a scope? That’s the best way I can think of to know for sure.
I have one, it works great and I have used to to connect and test different devices.
You could also build one yourself if you want to spend the time on it. Also check to see if other sites have similar serial port adapters…Ive seen a couple that were less enxpensive.
I use the rs1 connected to one of the um96 tranceivers. on the other end is a parallax bs2(similar to the basic atom) with some sensors and an lcd screen to view the data I"m sending.
