how to fix lcd cable ?

Dear All:

I have a discovery thermometer failed to display any characters on the screen, I found there’s a strange cable(it’s soft like a sponge) connecting to pc board and lcd which is no longer to be stuck to each other, wondering if we can use any glue to stick them back to normal ?

Thanks

Joe

I think it’s named “Silicone Conductive Rubber”, but I don’t know how to stick it back, any advice would you appreciated…

Do not use any glue on the ends or you will lose any connectivity.

Wipe the ends clean with clean cloth and place it back in position, they generally have something for alignment.

A dab of some glue might help keep it in place but ensure you have it correctly aligned and working before fixing it down.

Thanks for response, I cleaned and put it back , nothing happened, the other side is LCD, I don’t have any ideas on how to solder it, any more other advice ?

Thanks

jOe

This is a so called Zebra connector and is not soldered in place. It is help in pace by pressure and a tacky adhesive. Notice on the edges there is a black strip? If you look under a magnifier, you will see these are hundreds or thousands of unique conductors. Those conductors press against the PCB to form a connection. Zebra connectors are a royal pain in the neck. They are used for high volume production, but they have a high rate of failure from shock or vibration. Once disconnected they are essentially non repairable as the sticky edges are no longer adhesive. Purchasing a new connector may be possible if you can find the exact height, width, and length.

Thanks for prompt response, if I do get a new connector, how can I stick them on both side (pcb and lcd)? using some sore of coductive glue ?

I think the zebra connector comes already primed with the sticky adhesive, although never having purchased one I can’t say for sure. I just know my success rate on getting those working again is ZERO.

I’m not sure how this is solved…

However, have you tried putting it back in place and fitting the LCD over it to see if it now works?

I have put it back , it does not work though, I have given it up…as fll-freak said: I just know my success rate on getting those working again is ZERO
