Is there a trick to turning it on the first time I get it? I plugged it in, the green charge light shows, but nothing happens when I push and hold the power button. Even if the batteries were shipped in some kind of low charge state, it’s designed to work when plugged in, right? I carefully opened it up and checked the connections, everything looked good and tight, and the batteries did register just under 4v. I thought maybe just a bad screen, but I scan with my phone, and there’s no available bluetooth and no available WiFi. What am I missing?
Hi, have you followed all the steps mentioned here?
I have, but aside from push and hold the power button, what other steps are there?
@MattCW - it really should be as easy as ‘push and hold the power button until the display turns on’; sorry it’s not! The batteries ship with ~70% charge so I doubt that is the issue.
Let’s try this: Attach a USB cable. Press and hold the power button for ~5 seconds (2 seconds is enough to get the display on so a bit more to make sure the device is on). Do you see any COM ports appear? (In windows, this is best seen using device manager->Ports). If yes, open a terminal window and let me know if there’s any output. You should see an update every few seconds. Here’s some step by step instructions: https://sparkfun.github.io/SparkFun_RTK … th_serial/
Thank you for the response. I do see new COM ports appear, one is a USB Serial Device, the other is USB-SERIAL CH340. Per those linked instructions, I connected (using PuTTY) and I got a bunch of “getMessageSetting failed: Class-0xF5 ID-0xFD” (the last two hex numbers were different, FD was the final one). After that, I got some messages that said “Disable RTCM failed, SetMainTalkerID failed” and a few others. However, the screen seems to be on right now, I had never seen it on before. It looks like it’s in Rover mode, but the screen doesn’t match the documentation examples. Then I single-short-pressed the power button, the battery status was displayed in the terminal window, then “Set rate failed” then “setDynamicModel failed” followed by several “getRTCMSettings failed” message. I single short-press the power button, but the screen doesn’t change.
This is an image of the screen: [](288207198-364148089157361-1598695506058333650-n hosted at ImgBB — ImgBB)
Very odd. Those messages indicate the GNSS module is not responding to I2C commands.
The display is working (albeit partially) now? That’s a step in the nearly right direction. Out of curiosity, what did you change?
It sounds like your unit has something interrupting I2C communication (the display is I2C, the GNSS is I2C, etc). You are welcome to return the unit to us for inspection or repair. If you’d like to keep working on the unit, feel free.
From the serial terminal, I recommend pressing a key to open the serial menu, then ‘s’ for system status. This should output a list of systems that are online and offline. Please paste the output of the system menu.
I am having same issue. No reponse from power button. Plug unit into wall with supplied power cord. charge light comes on then goes off after several minutes. no response from long or short. hooked up to computer via usb-c. see two com ports register in device manager. COM6 is ch40. putty with 115200 to com 6 gets nothing? tried pressing ‘s’ several times. no response. Opened up to check connections. light is on on main board. holding power button for 6 seconds then light goes out. quick press of power button and light comes back on. Please advise?
So, I was going to try the additional steps you posted, and I went to turn it on after connecting to my computer, but it began working normally. To begin testing for my purposes, I connected the bluetooth to my phone and SWMaps. It had entered the base setup phase after acquiring the initial lock, then it shut down and I am unable to restart it. The only movement was from one desk to another (closer to a window), it has not been dropped or anything else physical. I think I’ll definitely be returning this unit to y’all for inspection. I’ve already initiated communications with John Trepke from tech support so I’ll go ahead and tell him that I’ll be returning the unit for testing/inspection.
@MattCW - Sounds good. I’ll let you know when I see it.
@photinos - Sounds like the device is turning on/off but not doing anything else. If the COM port is appearing but you’re not seeing any serial output, I recommend attempting to flash firmware onto the unit. A step by step process is here: https://sparkfun.github.io/SparkFun_RTK … indows-gui
Please let us know how it goes.

This tells me the I2C bus is borked. I’m not sure what’s causing it but nothing is able to communicate. Please DM me your order # and I’ll get a return going.
@sparky sent dm from my phone. Did you receive?
As a side note, I also bought an RTK Express (on Amazon because 2-day shipping) and it works great and as-designed, so I’m definitely not thinking user-error any longer.
Hi Photinos - got it! Thanks
I am having the same issue here. no screen response. when connected to USB only 1 extra port is appearing in the device manager, it cycles for about 30 seconds then turns off NO screen response.
The second com port shows in the device manager about 2 seconds before it times out and both com ports disconnect.
I have updated the CH340 drivers as per the guide,
???
Did you ever get this fixed? Trying to figure out if there is any hope for mine or if I need to just scrap it and get something else.
My Facet miraculously started working it was very exciting … but then has stopped AGAIN … NO response to the on button.
I have posted on this forum as directed and have not been contacted by any company reps.
I did get an email today asking about my cusutomer satisfaction in regards to this product .
What should I do now to follow this up ?
@MechFx - I’m sorry I missed this post! It sounds like a defective display board. I’m happy to have a look at it. Sorry it’s giving you fits!
I’d like to have a look at it. A finnicky unit is actually a bit more helpful that a completely dead unit. I’m very curious to see what’s going wrong. Please start by getting an RMA: https://www.sparkfun.com/returns
OK RMA filled in … thanks and by the way I’m in Sydney Australia …
