Reading Ultra-Small UHF RFID Tag question

Hello everyone,

I’m new here and currently working on a project. I was wondering if anyone could assist me with a question I have.

I’m planning to embed a small 1.25mm RFID tag inside a 10mm diameter block of metal, possibly covering it up so that it’s not noticeable. My question is whether the RFID reader will still be able to read the tag, or does the tag need to be placed directly on the reader? If not, how close does the tag need to be in order for it to be readable? Additionally, I’m curious about whether the tag itself requires a coiled antenna or if it already has one built inside.

Thank you for your help.

They won’t work in metal :frowning:

The tags have a resonant circuit inside; an antenna is usually added to the reader side https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/si … al-antenna

You could certainly experiment to figure out something that might work…but it could prove difficult
