Roof mounted RTK base need lightning protection?

Anyone know if a roof mounted RTK base would need lightning protection?

I plan to have a plastic weather-proof case like the Sparkfun RTK Facet. It would run off a 5v USB cable routed outside to the unit.

I imagine that the more the cable and the unit extend upward beyond earth or other grounded elements of the structure, the more likely it would be to be hit by lightning.

It would heavily depend on conditions in your area…but if you’re at all worried then it’s probably a good idea to do so, especially given the low cost of a rod vs RTK equipment
