Soft Power Switch with DataLogger IoT (9DoF IMU): battery recharge?

Hello,

I have a SparkFun DataLogger IoT - 9DoF IMU that I use with a 3.7V 1500mAh 603959 LiPo battery Rechargeable, and I recharge the LiPo battery through the DataLogger (with the built-in MCP73831 single cell LiPo charger). The battery is connected to the PH 2-pin JST connector.

I am wondering if I use a SparkFun Soft Power Switch with PH 2-pin JST connectors in serie (battery > Soft Power Switch > DataLogger) : will I still be able to recharge the batter with the DataLogger?

(I am reluctant to brutally try to connect the LiPo battery to the Soft Power Switch, turn it ON, and also provide a 5V input via the USB-C to the DataLogger :innocent:, hence the question!!)

Thank for your help!

Julien

That should work fine

Hi @JSK ,

From the product description: “The Soft Power Switch supports battery charging, allowing you to power your project while conveniently replenishing the battery.”

The DataLogger IoT will charge the battery at 500mA. That’s fine. But if you use the Soft Power Switch with a different board, check that that board also limits the charge current to around 500mA. The datasheet for the Dual MOSFET suggests the charge-path diode is good for 1.25A. But it would be wise to stick to 500mA.

I hope this helps,
Paul

Thank you all!

It’s working! Here is the way it behave:

a) Step 1: LiPo battery connected to the Soft Power Switch via PH 2-pin JST; Soft Power Switch connected to DataLogger via PH 2-pin JST. Soft Power Switch is OFF; only the red VIN LED is illuminated.

b) Step 2: 5V input via the USB-C is connected to the DataLogger. Now, the DataLogger shows the orange CHG LED illuminated, the blinking blue LED for the data aquisition. The Soft Power Switch is still OFF; but the red VIN LED and red VOUT LED are now illuminated.

And the LiPo battery is charging!
