Just tested out two SparkFun RTK Facet that I received about a month ago. Both are configured as rovers for testing purposes. One picks up satellites immediately after powering on while the other has yet to pickup any satellites. It seems to be defective. How can I resolve this issue? I did not purchase my units through SparkFun and noticed the SparkFun does not have any units in stock. Do you keep spares due to failures that are discovered in the future? Can I swap components, i.e. antenna between the two units to troubleshoot without breaking the warranty? Do I need to be grounded if I do that?
Hi miket - Hmm that seems really odd. Just to be sure - you’re out doors with a clear view of the sky? I presume you’re somewhere with some reception if you’ve got one unit working but I’m surprised the problem unit is getting zero SIV.
Yes we have spares of everything to build new units, as well as repair anything that needs it.
If you’d rather just return the unit for repair, let me know here and we’ll get in contact and get it fixed immediately. If you’d like to poke around a bit, the top cover and antenna elements are easy enough to remove. The antenna element is connected to the mainboard with a U.FL connector. While I have not see a unit have its U.FL connector pop loose, it may be possible.

Go slow. Be really careful with the U.FL connector on the PCB. I’ve ripped off 2 or 3 from a PCB and it really ruins the day.
Here are some tips for removing and reseating the connector: https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/th … ng-ufl/all
Can I swap components, i.e. antenna between the two units to troubleshoot without breaking the warranty?
Yes you can swap them to determine if it’s the element. Again, just don’t damage the U.FL connector and you’ll be good.
Do I need to be grounded if I do that?
Yes. Be sure to ground yourself to your computer or other good grounded device before opening the unit. There’s plenty in there that will not respond kindly to 15kV, but in general you will be ok. Just don’t walk across the room and then touch the open device.
