Tutorial 2 Question: Parallel to Serial

First, let me say that I’ve tried searching and was not able to get an answer to my question.

I’m following along with the tutorials on the SparkFun main website, and the “parts” that it has to order are the parallel port cables. I do not have a parallel port on my computer. However, the serial port version is not available (I checked…). I was wondering if I would be able to use a Parallel → Serial adapter (such as [this one), and still be able to do everything like normal.

Or should I just wait for the serial one to come back into stock?

That isn’t a parallel-serial adapter, it’s a DB-25 to DB-9 serial adapter.

If you need a parallel port your best option is to buy a PCI parallel port card. They are quite cheap.

I doubt that you will need a parallel to serial convert, but it is possible. Which tutorial are you referring to?

I have similar problem. I do not have a parallel port on my computer. USB to Parallel adapters do not help when it comes to JTAG programming. Looked up online and found this…

http://www-user.tu-chemnitz.de/~heha/ba … ex.html.en

he claims to provide bi-directional parallel port using USB. I contacted him but he never replied.

Alternatives:

  1. Buying a PCMCIA parallel adapter for laptops and destops.(plz correct me if I am wrong)

  2. If you do not have a free slot on your computer then get a new PC with parallel port…most obvious one but expensive.

I am not sure how serial to parallel converters any different from USB adapters.

Again please correct me if I have a wrong notion.

Thanks.

If your computer has a usb port you might want to consider using the AVRISPmkII programmer. Goto digikey.com and type “avrisp2” in the search bar.
