Tutorial on getting to BT serial configuration main menu doesn't work (for me)

Either I’m missing something essential or the tutorial is missing step(s).

Followed this to the letter, my screens look identical to the posted screenshots:

Getting the main menu to display kind of slides over to:

This allows the opening of the config menu as well as the viewing of all regular system output.

These instructions say:

Pressing any button will display the Main menu.

This doesn't work in BlueTooth Serial app. I programmed the macro buttons across the bottom to send characters, still the stream of data continues.

Well, now I know why.

Resolved by updating very out-of-date firmware. Only one of the available upgrade paths was workable, the desktop GUI uploader, all the rest for my device were blocked by non-supporting firmware. I tried them all.
