I am copying down the SparkFun UBlox ZOE M8 GPS breakout PCB design and noticed that there is a polygon trace to properly attach the antenna to the IC. SparkFun uses a single sides board, in my project I intend on using a majority of the GPS circuitry on the bottom side and the antenna connections on the top side. As long as I copy the polygon in the SparkFun board layout on the top layer, does it matter if the IC is connected to this polygon on the opposite side? Thanks
Hello,
The shape was chosen by the engineer to reduce resistance and interference in accordance with the IC’s datasheet. The key is getting the antenna connection as close to the antenna pin as much as possible. I think you’ll be alright, but I can’t guarantee that there won’t be weird behavior if you deviate from the original design.
While this may not be exactly what you need, you can find some good points and references here: http://colinkarpfinger.com/blog/2010/th … na-design/
I hope this helps point you in the right direction and I wish you the best of luck.
