USB A Breakout for Power

Hi there!

I need to supply power via USB from a 12V battery to a Jetson Nano. I know that I need a buck-boost converter (COM-15208), but I’d like to use the USB breakout board (BOB-12700) to connect to the computer. Can I use the USB A board just for power and will there be any issues with not using the data pins?

Thanks!

You can leave the data pins disconnected if you want to, the breakout will still work without those.

If you’re trying to power a Jetson, you’re definitely going to need a voltage regulator to bring your 12 volt battery power down to 5 volts, applying 12 volts to the Jetson will destroy it as soon as you plug it in. A Jetson needs at least 2 amps of current to operate and that doesn’t include anything plugged into the Jetson. I don’t think our Buck-Boost converter is going to be able to deliver enough current to run a Jetson so you’re probably going to need a different buck regulator to get your 12 volts down to 5. Pololu does make a [buck regulator that would work great with a Jetson though and you might consider using that.](Pololu - 5V, 3.2A Step-Down Voltage Regulator D36V28F5)
