x-ctu wont find com ports // x-bee hello world failure

hey possible saviours!

i seem to be unable to find posts or tutorials on that problem that is:

i am running X-CTU for working with xbees on a VM on os-x and it doesnt show me any ports.

on the hardware side i am using an xbee series 1 upon an xbee shield mounted on an arduino ng (without the atmega). the jumpers are set to usb, so this part doesnt seem to be the problem. what’s weird is, that if i use the terminal in os-x and type ls /dev/tty.*, it also doesn’t show me any ports containing usb in their name. only 3 blootooth ports get listed that way. now i am quite a novice and might be using the wrong command in the terminal, but the x-ctu shouldnt care and just give it to me straight, no? the xbee has its sticker saying XB24-ACI-001-revB. a module by that name isnt even listed in the modem-section of x-ctu.

does anyone have an idea? i’m desperate since the projects deadline is approaching fast and i’m not even getting to the hello world part…

p.s.: when i click the “read” button in the modem-section to check the attached xbee, it tells me “failed to open com port. read parameters… failed”

next update: my usb-key is recognized by the windows xp virtual maschine, which should mean that the usb-ports are there and recognized.

X-CTU running in a virtual x86 machine using windows on a Mac? And you’re surprised that it has problems?

Well, don’t do that!

why is that? i read several projects on the web, where it seemed to be fine. would bootcamp then be the solution?

using the arduino programming environment i found out, that my usb-ports have “vanished”. which is awkward, since they work fine for plugin stuff in like an usb-key (as mentioned above) or my iPhone.

yet i dont believe, that this particular problem is caused by the windows xp vm, since i couldnt find the ports on terminal before i installed the vm.
