I am a bit confused as to what components, at the very least, I should purchase to get the gator:soil working. The required components list shows various recommendations from just boards to full kits.
If I were to purchase a micro:bit Go bundle, a gator:bit, and some alligator clips, would that be enough? Would the battery holder that comes with the Go bundle be enough to power the micro:bit, gator:bit, and gator:soil?
Thanks!
I apologize for the confusion, yes that should work fine (don’t forget to add the gator:soil as well). Would it have been easier to understand if the alligator clips were separated from the gator:boards instead of shared on the same line? I was hoping that the [Hardware Assembly[/b] section would also help illustrate the setup and hardware needed.
- I tried to break up the options for the hardware in the hookup guide:
- Choose one of the options for the micro:bit.
- Choose a gator:board and add alligator clips.
- Technically, you don’t need to use a gator:bit board, but it does prevent accidental connections to the other pins next to the 0, 1, and 2 pads of micro:bit.
- If you do grab a gator:bit, I recommend getting the gator:bit (v2) since it is cheaper and fixes some power issues in the original version.
To answer your last question, yes powering everything through the battery pack will work.](https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/sparkfun-gatorsoil-hookup-guide/hardware-assembly)
This was totally my fault. I think what you put together is fantastic but this is the first time I have been referencing the site so I was not familiar with how the various tutorials are linked and where. I spent a few days looking through several of them but seemed to have missed the key one, the Hardware Assembly, for which you provided the link, THANK YOU! I saw the picture from that tutorial on another page but could not find where it came from.
Now that you explained the options for the hardware hookup it totally makes sense. What confused me is that I wasn’t sure if I should buy the Inventor’s Kit or the Go Bundle. Did not know if they were required for different purposes. I was not sure how big of a batter pack I needed. I think listing the alligator clips is just fine. That component made sense and I already had it in my cart.
Yep, definitely will be grabbing a gator:bit v2. I also have the Alligator Test Leads in my cart. I will just have to decide between the Go Bundle or the stand alone micro:bit and a 4xAA battery holder for the gator:bit.
Thank you so much for clarifying!
No problem. Thank you for your feedback!
I have made a few changes to the guide to help clarify that information for new customers. Hopefully, to avoid any confusion that you had.
