Qwiic LIDAR-Lite v4

Hi Forum Members

I have purchase Qwiic LIDAR-Lite v4. Can I use the product in an outdoor environment, like measuring the distance between moving cars? Previously I have used ultrasonic sensors for the same purpose.

Hello vsinghce, and thanks for posting.

Sadly the Qwiic LIDAR-Lite v4 is not waterproof so if you wanted to use it outdoors you’d need to find some sort of enclosure to put it in. We don’t carry a compatible enclosure and I’m not sure one is available.

Thanks, Chris for your useful response. I have one more query regarding LiDAR V4. Can I mount the device on the dashboard of the probe vehicle or mount on the roof (with some kind mount frame etc.) to measure the instantaneous distance between the probe vehicle (moving car equipped with sensor systems) and a leader car (car ahead of probe vehicle)? I am quite dubious about the fact that windshield may hinder the LED signals of LiDAR. What is your opinion regarding this?

It could be possible. The only problem is that the glass will affect the beam of light thanks to the wonderful meddling of laws of physics… So I wouldn’t put a lot of vested interest in super accurate readings in this arrangement.

Also, please keep in mind that use in a vehicle, or in any instance that could affect the safety and well being of human life, is highly warned against.
