Rotary Encoder not working

HI, I recently received a Quadrature Rotary Encoder. I am not getting any feedback from the encoder when connected to a position detector system or to an oscilloscope. I tried ordering a new encoder but its backorder. Please help with a replacement unit or troubleshoot the existing unit.

The Encoder I have is - Rotary Encoder - 200 P/R (Quadrature)/COM-10932

These encoders have an open collector output and don’t actually output a voltage. The outputs both drop to ground when active and you need pullup resistors on the A and B lines to see any voltage at the output. Two 10K resistors to VCC should get you working.

This diagram will show how to connect everything. (Note, the yellow wire does nothing on this encoder and can be left disconnected.)

Hi Chris, Thanks for your response. We tried testing it with the resistors and scopes. We get response from Channel A (Black) but no response from Channel B (White). Channel A reads 5V and gives pulses but Channel B just shows 5V but no pulses.

HI Chris, I purchased the part from Sparkfun. I followed the instructions you listed above a day back but I haven’t heard anything from Sparkfun so far. Is there anything required from me?
