Rotary Encoder out of spec

Hello,

We recently assembled our latest batch of robots that use COM-10932 for positioning, and it appears our particular batch received does not support the 5-12v specifications with a -5% and +10% voltage tolerance. https://www.sparkfun.com/products/10932

We operate these at 5v with an encoder buffer, and we are unable to get appropriate encoder ticks out of these units until it is powered up above 5.5V.

We have successfully used and integrated hundreds of these in the past without a problem, and we’re seeing this across our most recent order of 50. I have swapped a couple with a former order, and those ones work correctly.

We’re hoping you can help us receive units that function at 5V within posted tolerances.

Hi DV01d.

Are the labels/markings on the non working encoders the same as the working ones, or are they different at all? I’m wondering if the manufacturer sent us the wrong parts.

Markings are the same, only the PO# is different as it appears to be a different batch of parts. We overnighted one from your current inventory in hopes it is a new batch that doesn’t have this defect.

OK, let me know if the replacement you ordered works. If it does, we can get the remaining units replaced for you.

Thanks Chris,

We certainly appreciate your support and help in resolving this matter. Is there an RMA form I can fill out in advance? I expect to have the replacement unit in hand and validated today, and want to ensure we get working parts to get our robots up and running with minimal delays. Is it possible to secure the spares in the air and have them ship overnight?

Currently not seeing positive results with the ones you have in stock. They appear to be of the same batch or PO#52637. FWIW, the one I just received does output data to a encoder buffer, but it doesn’t send proper signals. The last ones we received that worked was PO#52151 for YUMO manufactured. Our last order prior to this was OMRON manufactured units which also worked just fine.

Unfortunately, we have some tight deadlines approaching, and I am worried that we’re not going to make our contractual commitments. Wondering what Sparkfun can do for us, given this problem.

Hello,

I haven’t heard back from you since my update yesterday. Any possibility you have either the omron built version or other yumo manufactured from a different PO in stock?

I’m hoping there is some update on this problem going into the weekend. So far any US based suppliers that source these through sparkfun (including SparkFun) all appear to have this same batch or PO of encoders that do not operate properly at 5v. I would like to understand how long you anticipate it could take to see resolution to this problem.

Hi DV01d.

Did the one unit you had shipped overnight not work either? If so, we may have a bad batch of these and I can get you setup with a RMA. I don’t know how long it will take to get a new shipment on these so if you need to get more quickly, your best bet would probably be to get what you need now from another wholesaler.

You can either fill in the [RMA form here, or reply back with your order number and I can get the RMA created for you.](Return Policy - SparkFun Electronics)
