Using an Amphenol FCI clincher with an FSR

Hi there,

I was just wondering before connecting the clincher, do I need to completely remove the metal connector from the FSR or simply snip off the pins protruding from the end of the flexible substrate? I found a video explaining this on the Sparkfun Instagram page but could not determine this. Just wanting to be sure to avoid needing to order more parts if done incorrectly.

Many thanks

Hi Tim,

You’ll just want to clip the leads/pins from the end of the FSR. If you cut off the metal connector you’ll most likely not have a good connection after clamping the clincher connector down.

Thanks a mil Mark

Well, I am 0 for 4 with the amphenol connectors. I got one to look good, but the connection was grounded out. And now my pins are cut off, so I can’t use the screw terminal solution I used for the other one, which I got from adafruit. That worked great, and took 10 seconds… should just have bought another one of those :frowning:

Any thoughts on how I can manage to connect this now?

Hi woodslanding,

Depending on how closely you cut the leads from your FSR, you might be able to carefully solder some wire to the two pins. Just be careful to not hold your iron on there for long at all (1-2 seconds max) so you do not damage the interior of the sensor from excess heat. Pre-tinning your wires will help reduce that solder time and heat transfer to the FSR material.
