vehicle driver hand's force sensor

Dear Members,

i am building a vehicle security device that detects driver fatigue based on his eyes closure and the force he applies on the steering wheel. combining these two features i hope to achieve a better accuracy of the device .

For the eyes tracking part i use a an Ir camera that will be pointed to the driver face, connected to processing unit which analyses frames and detect eyes and their percentage of closure continuously

For the hands force detection part, i liked the idea of using multiple small sensors mounted in the steering wheel perimeter, connected together and to a processing unit with flexible cables " http://www.date-conference.com/proce…LES/IP3_07.PDF "

i searched the web for small size , cheap and accurate force sensor and i found the Bosch high precision pressure sensor BMP085, https://www.sparkfun.com/datasheets/…5-DS000-05.pdf

but since it s designed to measure pressure variation i am in doubt if it s really what i need for my project, please help me to make the right choice for sensor.

Are you trying measure the force used to grab the wheel or that used to turn it ?

I think he’s trying to build a deadman switch.

i am sorry i didn’t saw the error for the links

the title of the project is " Distributed Sensor for Steering Wheel Grip Force

Measurement in Driver Fatigue Detection "

i am trying to detect the variations in the force applied to the steering wheel by the driver, is it possible to use the BMP085 which is a barometric pressure sensor to detect these variations? is there another switch more fit for this application ?

I don’t see how the MP085, which is a barometric pressure sensor, can be used to sense grip pressure. Something more akin to this is what I think you’re looking for.

Zhmur can you please share how you did the eye tracking.

You could try to put a semi-flexible tube in the steering wheel and measure the air pressure in the tube.
