xbee 2.5 + FTDI Basic problem

Hello,

I have 2 XBee Pro 50mW Series 2.5 Chip Antennas, a XBee Explorer USB, a Breakout Board for XBee Module, and a FTDI Basic Breakout - 3.3V. I am brand new to wireless and I am not quite getting them to talk to each other.

I am using X-CTU to manage the setup of the xbees. I have read a bunch of the tutorials, but no luck so far. I set one up as a Coordinator and one as a Router/End Device. I let the Router/End Device receive its MYID from the Coordinator and then I set the Coordinator ATDL to that ID number. All the info is shown in the photos below. I have set them both to a baud rate of 9600. The Router/End Device is mounted on the Breakout Board and connected to the FTDI Basic Breakout. The Coordinator is mounted on a XBee Explorer USB which is connected to my computer.

When I plug them both in and power up, the LEDs I attached to the ON and Associate pins on the Breakout Board (Router/End Device) turn on and after a few seconds the LED on the Associate pin begins to blink. If I try to test the modem connection to the Router/End Device on the breakout board through the (USB) com connection of the FTDI board using X-CTU, I get the error “unable to connect to modem”.

If I try the range test, I just get timeouts with no data.

Here is a [photo of both x-ctu windows with each of the xbees information.

In the circuit I have 4 wires connecting the FTDI basic to the xbee breakout board: 3.3V and GND are obviously connected to their counterparts on the breakout. I have connected the TX0 on the FTDI Basic to the DOUT on the breakout and the RX1 on the FTDI to the DIN on the breakout.

Here are two photos of the circuit. [photo1 [photo2

Sorry about the mishmash of wire colors, but I am at the cabin! Thanks a lot for any help you can give me.](http://www.bookthecabin.com/volantor/circuitB.JPG)](http://www.bookthecabin.com/volantor/circuitA.JPG)](http://www.bookthecabin.com/volantor/xctu.jpg)

Try running the XBee Dout to the Rx in of the FTDI and the TX of the FTDI to the Din of the XBee.

Hi,

I think you should read this tutorial (if you haven’t obviously):

http://blog.kevinhoyt.org/wp-content/xbee-setup.pdf

It’s a very straight forward tutorial on how to work with these modules

hope it helps!

Thanks for your help. I got everything working…XBee rocks!
