Hello:
I’ve been using my Tsunami Nutella for at least a couple years now, no issues. I recently switched to a new SD card and updated firmware and a new config file. I’ve put these in the unit, but when I hold USER and tap RESET, nothing happens. I wait holding user, nothing. I let go of user, nothing. After this, nothing flashes on status even after letting go of user. One I tap reset, the status light blinks once every second or so.
I’m not sure what I’ve screwed up here. Can someone point me in the right direction?
Please carefully review section 8 of the Tsunami User Guide:

Are you renaming the hex file as indicated? Is the board still functioning normally with the original firmware? (Flashing once every couple of seconds is normal behavior when not playing audio.)
the file is of course named tsunamix.hex
this board is not functioning any more. I tried to revert to my old sd card (which I had not changed) and it will not load or play.
more details:
I loaded the newest mono firmware, my cleaned and numbered mono samples, and the latest ini file onto a brand new non-U sd card. The card is a Kingston 4GB, I’m pretty sure it was one of the ones that was listed in the document. My previous card was a sandisk class-10 64gb. I have not changed contents the previous card.
I tried several times to initiate the firmware update and nothing happened, status light stayed dim.
I put the old firmware from my old card onto the new card and tried again. This time I got a long flash - short flash on the status light which I understand is SD format error. I re-format the new SD card (non-quick) in FAT32 on a pc and then copy everything back. Tried with both new and old firmwares, nothing would happen. Tried to revert to old card (which has not been changed), nothing happens.
When I power the module on, I am not getting a slow flashing on the status led, which is what I would normally expect. Been using the Tsunami for a couple years now so I’m not sure what’s wrong.
OK this gets weirder. I heard some people with a different module had some SD card format issues, so they suggested the format tool on SDcard.org. I re-formatted the new card with that, then copied all of the old card files to it. This includes the firmware with a date of 3/10/2019.
The old card contents were all working fine, all the samples would play, etc.
Trying to do anything, update firmware, trigger samples, nothing worked when I put the new card in. I put the old card in. Same issue, nothing working, firmware procedure doesn’t show any flashes. Pushing a trigger button does illuminate the trigger LED so the module has power.
If I power on, with any card in the slot, the status light stays unlit. If I remove the card, then insert it again, some of the time I got the long-blink/short-blink pattern with the new card and a slow short flash (e.g. normal) with the old card. Ok, let’s just assume the new card is not compatible. Old card, status light is flashing slow short blinks, try to update firmware; nothing happens. After trying, the status light no longer blinks at all.
Do you think the module is somehow damaged?
Describe the LED behavior when you do the following:
-
Reset the board with no microSD card installed.
-
Initiate the firmware update procedure (bootloader) with no microSD card installed.
Do these tests multiple times to see if the results are consistent.
no card in: power on, after a few seconds status light flashes rapidly then flashes short and slow. Press reset, nothing for a few seconds, then the same as power on, rapid 6(?) flashes followed by slow short flash that continues.
second power cycle: same.
third power cycle: same.
Initiate firmware update, no card installed. Nothing for a few seconds, then a repeating single LONG flash.
4th power cycle, repeat procedure, same.
5th power cycle, wait for status light to blink short-slow. Insert SD card (the old one that had worked, should not have had any changes on it). Press reset. Nothing on status after that.
6th power cycle, no card, wait for status light to blink short slow. Insert old SD card, initiate firmware procedure. While holding USER I tap RESET and continue to hold USER. I have to hold USER for about 1.5 minutes and then the status light goes to long-short, long-short. That’s a read error right?
The fact that you’re able to elicit sensible error codes and normal idle flashing behavior from the LED means that the processor is running at least some of the time and you haven’t bricked anything. Both the bootloader and the original firmware are running, at times anyway. Two things come to mind:
-
Power supply issues can cause the processor to go off into space at any point. I think this is not likely given your description but it’s worth asking how you are powering things. Is anything connected to Tsunami other than a power supply when you are doing these test?
-
My best guess, and it’s just a guess, is that you have a hardware issue with the microSD socket. Perhaps a questionable solder connection on one of the pins that over time was stressed and is no longer good, or is intermittent. I’d take a close look at it under a magnifier and mechanically probe the pins to see if any are loose. This has in fact happened to me on rare occasions.
Re: #1, no there is nothing plugged into any jack nor the midi. While the module draws a decent amount of +5, my power supply has 1A of +5v and very little of that is used elsewhere. I bought the Tsunami fully assembled. Unfortunately due to a medical condition I can no longer work on small electronics. Like you said, something probably small but I cannot fix it, so I guess I’ll have to buy a module to replace it.
